Ending a live stream correctly is just as important as starting it. Stopping a broadcast gracefully ensures accurate analytics, prevents unnecessary streaming usage, and gives viewers a clear end to the session.
Why it’s important to stop your broadcast properly
1. Avoid exceeding your streaming limits
Most plans include a monthly live streaming allowance (for example, a set number of broadcast hours).
If a stream is left running in the background after the event has finished, those hours continue to count toward your total. This can lead to:
Exceeding your monthly allowance
Unexpected overage charges
Incorrect reporting of broadcast duration
2. Ensure accurate analytics and reporting
Ending the broadcast properly allows the system to:
Record the correct end time
Finalize viewer analytics
Capture total watch time and engagement accurately
If the stream is not closed correctly, analytics may continue tracking inactivity or show inflated broadcast durations.
3. Provide a clear ending for viewers
A graceful shutdown gives viewers time to see that the session has ended rather than experiencing an abrupt cut-off. This creates a more professional viewing experience and ensures the recording closes cleanly.
How to stop a live broadcast correctly
Follow these steps when your event has finished:
In Webcastcloud Live Studio, click End Broadcast.
Wait for the 60-second countdown so viewers can see the stream ending.
Keep the Live Studio page open until the countdown has fully completed.
Stop streaming in your broadcast software (If using an external streaming software such as Zoom, StreamYard or OBS Studio).
This sequence ensures the stream closes cleanly across all systems and analytics are finalized correctly.
Important reminders
Do not simply close your browser or streaming software without ending the broadcast in Live Studio first.
Always confirm the broadcast has fully ended before leaving the page.
If you run regular live events, make ending the broadcast part of your run-sheet or event checklist.
About the End Now Option
After clicking End Broadcast, you will also see an End Now option.
Selecting End Now stops the stream immediately for all viewers, without waiting for the 60-second countdown.
Because live streams can have a slight delay, ending immediately may cause some viewers to miss the final moments of your session.
Best practice:
Use the standard 60-second countdown for live events.
Reserve End Now for testing or situations where an immediate stop is required.
